Overall Brand Impression:

Chevrolet reaches a nexus point in its history in 2024 as its planned metamorphosis will see the popular North American auto brand shift. A model line consisting of a growing number of electrified vehicles will now include a hybrid version of the classic Corvette sports car. While tough and durable Silverado, versatile Traverse family crossover and even the Malibu sedan continue as mainstays this year, 2024 for the bowtie badged marque will see the end of the road for the second life of the Chevrolet Camaro.

What’s New for 2024:

Changes are found throughout much of the 2024 Chevrolet product range. The flashiest addition to the bowtie badge is the new Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray. A hybrid version of the eighth generation sports car, the E-Ray features the combined influence of a powerful V8 gasoline engine with an electric motor channelled through an electric all-wheel drive system. The collective gasoline/electric momentum of 655 horsepower has the potential of becoming a new force in American performance.

Chevrolet’s 2024 lineup features a multitude of new battery-electric vehicles made possible through General Motors Ultium EV platform. The fully-electric version of the Chevrolet’s Silverado pickup truck is the most anticipated model. Appearing only as a well-equipped four-door crew cab model, the 2024 Silverado EV will boast an impressive driving range and work capacity.

Also joining Chevrolet’s growing electric vehicle lineup is the Blazer EV and Equinox EV. Differing in style to their gasoline-powered counterparts, these 2024 Chevrolet electric crossovers each feature fast charging capabilities allowing them to reach to travel up to 112 and 125 kilometers on a 10-minute charge. Able to reach 513 kilometers on a full charge, the Chevrolet Equinox EV is avilable as a front-wheel drive model or one equipped with an electric all-wheel drive system (eAWD). Top-trimmed versions of the 2024 Equinox EV include Adaptive Cruise Control,  wireless phone charging and an Autosense power liftgate as well as the option of Super Cruise driver assist system. Precise pricing has yet to be announced for the Chevrolet Equinox EV but General Motors has estimated its retail price starting at around $35,000.

Coming to market before the Equinox EV, the 2024 Blazer EV demonstrates an attractive level of performance and versatility. With a maximum system output of 557 horsepower and 648 lb-ft. of torque, the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV can accelerate from 0 to 96 kilometers per hour in under 4 seconds.  In Canada, Chevrolet Blazer EV sales started in summer of 2023 at $56,598. The more affordable 1LT trimmed version of the Blazer EV will launch during the first quarter of 2024 at a price of $51,998 in most of Canada ($54,548 in Quebec). The 2024 Blazer EV lineup will also include a performance-oriented SS as well as Police Pursuit Vehicle (PPV) variant.

Chevrolet’s line of gasoline-powered crossover vehicles also receives several updates for the 2024 model year. The mid-sized Traverse gains a more truck-like exterior aesthetic similar to the proportions of the Tahoe or Suburban. The redesigned 2024 Chevrolet Traverse also boasts a new 315-horsepower turbocharged 2.5-liter engine, retouched interior including an enlarged 17.7-inch infotainment touchscreen as well as standard Chevy Safety Assist technologies. A new Z71 trimmed Chevrolet Traverse is an off-road suited package adding all-terrain tires, retuned suspension, twin-clutch all-wheel drive system, Hill Descent Control and more than an inch (2.54 centimeters) of increased ground clearance.

Introduced early in 2023, the entry-level Chevrolet Trax’s 2024 model had grown up. The 2024 Chevrolet Trax is 27.9 centimeters (11 inches) longer than the previous generation model but a 10.1 centimeter lower overall height grants the vehicle a more pronounced stance. The added length and wide of the 2024 Trax translates into a larger cabin that also boasts reduced road noise thanks to the incorporation of Active Noise Cancellation. A 137-horsepower turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine propels the new Chevrolet Trax.

The 2024 Chevrolet Trailblazer is given a new front end design with unique grille designs for each trim level. Revised interior center display and driver information center as well as 19-inch wheels for the RS model are also upgrades found for the 2024 Trailblazer.

While the Silverado EV is garnering the most headlines amongst the automotive public, Chevrolet’s high-capacity Silverado HD lineup continues to show exceptional work capabilities with a 6.6-liter gasoline V8 or the 6.6-liter Duramax turbo-diesel. For 2024, the Chevrolet Silverado HD touts a number of styling and performance improvements including a new front fascia. The Duramax powerplant has been retuned to deliver 470 horsepower and 975 lb.-ft. of torque as well as better low-speed performance. All 2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD gasoline and diesel models are fitted with the Allison 10-speed automatic transmission as standard. Two new trim levels are added to the heavy-duty truck line for 2024 High Country Midnight Edition and the ZR2. The first Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 incorporates an array of off-roading hardware including Multimatic DSSV dampers, rear e-locker and 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires.

Both the Chevrolet Silverado HD ZR2 as well as the mid-sized Colorado ZR2 and Silverado 1500 ZR2 will be available with a new Bison model. The ZR2's Bison package elevates the off-roading prowess of the Chevrolet trucks with a number of accessories sourced from American Expedition Vehicles (AEW) such as heavy-duty bumpers and special wheels.

Minor changes have been made with the Silverado 1500 pickup truck line for 2024. A new Midnight Edition of the High Country and a Blackout Appearance package is also joined by TurboMax branding for the 2024 Silverado 1500's 2.7-liter High-Output four cylinder engine.

The Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban large sport utility vehicles are unchanged for 2024 as a major update to the models have already been announced for the 2025 model year.

The first generation battery-electric Bolt and Bolt EUV have been dropped from Chevrolet’s lineup for 2024 with a replacement announced in the near future being produced on the Ultium platform.

Finally, the 2024 model year is the noteworthy end for the Chevrolet Camaro. Since the announcement by Chevrolet in middle of 2023, there have been no word on how or if the bowtie badge plans to continue offering an affordable sports car using an electric powertrain.

Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray ($150,324 Canadian): Both compelling and controversial, Chevrolet’s prized Corvette sports car becomes the newest product to be envisioned with electrification with the introduction of the E-Ray.

At first glance, the 2024 Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray doesn’t appear to differ that greatly from the Stingray or the Z06 variants of the performance car. The wider fenders and quarter panels as well as the front end of the E-Ray borrows inspiration from the Z06 model while standard ground effects are also part of its aerodynamic shape. The E-Ray’s uniqueness is, of course, found under the elegant sport shape.

A familiar 6.2-liter V8 generating 495 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque remains mid-mounted towards the rear of the passenger cabin of the 2024 Corvette E-Ray but a permanent magnet electric motor is located at the front producing the equivalent of 160 horsepower. Maximum output from the hybrid powertrain is rated at 655 horsepower. With electrically-driven front wheels, the Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray boasts an eAWD system capable of launching the production version of the sports car to never-before attainable acceleration. 0 to 96-kilometers per hour runs can occur in just 2.5 seconds. Operating from its 1.9 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, the E-Ray is capable of travelling in a “Stealth Mode” using just electric power at speeds below 72 kilometers per hour.

Chevrolet Silverado EV ($54,448 for WT trim level): Chevrolet’s top-selling vehicle year after year has been the Silverado pickup truck. Understandably seen as a popular and important model in the bowtie brand’s product range, the Chevrolet Silverado’s addition of a fully-electric version is definitely a high-profile introduction for 2024.

Arriving in a four-door crew cab body style, the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV features an innovative, aerodynamic design that also incorporates traditional truck flexibility. A lockable, waterproof compartment called an eTrunk is found towards the front where many typical truck buyers would find the internal combustion engine.

The 2024 Silverado EV launch consists of a WT (Work Truck) and RST First Edition model. Propelled through an electric powertrain delivering 510 horsepower and 615 lb.-ft. of torque, the Silverado EV WT model’s towing capacity is rated at 8,000 pounds and boasts a maximum payload capacity up to 1,200 pounds. On a full charge, the WT trim level can travel up to 724 kilometers. A premium-rated trim version of Chevrolet’s electric pickup truck, the RST First Edition variant includes four-wheel steering, automatic adaptable air suspension and Multi-Flex tailgate and midgate. Power rating for the 2024 Silverado EV RST First Edition is 754 horsepower and 785 lb.-ft. of torque.

Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Collector Edition ($90,830 Canadian without Collector Edition package): For the second time since the model’s introduction in late 1966, Chevrolet is ending production of their well-known pony car, the Camaro. On December 14th of 2023, the last Chevrolet Camaro rolled off its assembly line in Lansing, Michigan.

With the last Camaros being built for the 2024 model year, the 650-horsepower ZL1 is the retired model’s most powerful example. With a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine serving as propulsion mated to either a six-speed manual or 10-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, the 2024 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 comes loaded with additional performance-optimizing touches including 11 heat exchangers, Brembo brakes and Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires. Racing-inspired Recaro heated and ventilated front seats are found inside the super pony car alongside amenities such as an 8-inch touchscreen Chevrolet infotainment system and wireless phone charging.

Part of the final run of the Chevrolet Camaro is the Le Mans-themed Garage 56 edition as well as the Camaro Collector Edition. Finished in a Panther Black Matte primary exterior paint with a Black Metallic center stripe, the Camaro Collector Edition is also richly accent by red-painted brake calipers and polished black wheel lug nuts. The Camaro ZL1 version of the late edition package includes a Mosaic Black Metallic front splitter, carbon fiber molding for the instrumental panel as well as a visible weave carbon fiber rear spoiler for coupe models.

The Camaro Collector Edition package’s price in Canada has not been publicly disclosed but American pricing amounts to roughly $5,000 extra to the 2024 Camaro’s retail price. For the ZL1, Collector Edition examples will be limited to only 350 vehicles for all of North America. Additionally, owners of the Camaro Collector Edition 2024 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 will also receive a custom Shinola watch.

A Canadian Star Car: Red Green's Possum Van

Clip of Possum Van during a Red Green Show season 1 scene transition.  It could be argued that the car someone regularly drives can be reflective of their personality. The level of character traits found in our automobiles can range from subtle to flamboyant as practicality, style, power, brand loyalty and other details are factors influencing our vehicle affection. On the big screen and silver screen, an automobile (frequently popularized as a Star Car) can be used to affirmatively to expand on a human character. Batman’s Batmobile, the Dodge Charger called the ‘General Lee’ in Dukes of Hazzard, the Volvo P1800 featured in the 1960s television version of The Saint, the Aston Martin DB5 driven by James Bond in some of the most famous spy movies are some popular examples where vehicles play a major role in reinforcing the appearance of fictional individuals. Due to the budgetary constraints of Canadian media productions, the presence of native Star Cars is rare. However, one success...

Honda’s Secret 30th Anniversary In Indy Car Racing

Photo Credit: Engine Developments Ltd. Too many times, forgetting an anniversary would end with someone spending time in the proverbial doghouse. This has apparently happened this year as the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series season concluded with no major celebrations or recognition for what is 30 years since a major current partner of American open wheel racing began participation in the sport. The following article is a collection of the details I’ve learned as well as some insight from engine builder John Judd on what was a quiet 30th anniversary in the Verizon IndyCar Series. During the week where the 30th running of the Canadian street race now known as the Honda Indy Toronto, I was compelled to capture the flavour of the inaugural event. The viewing experience provided me some insight into a period of time where I was too young to absorb auto racing in the manner I do today. A race that featured television coverage with no regular onscreen statistics, the league used a local ...

The 1967 Indy 500: When An STP-Sponsored Turbine Almost Changed Racing

Photo Credit: Uncredited Photographer/IMS LLC Racing has always been the ultimate proving ground for automobiles. Not only has competition promoted innovations big and small, race cars have also influenced overall vehicle appearance. At the 1967 Indianapolis 500, the STP-Paxton TurboCar fielded by the late Andy Granatelli provided a shocking example of how much racing at the speedway evolved over 56 years. Ever since the first 500-mile event was held at the 2.5-mile rectangular oval Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1911, the winning Marmon Wasp with a rearview mirror paved the way for what would be a grand showcase of automotive development. Accompanying “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing,” advancements in automobile technology showed greater sophistication with every passing decade in the quest for more speed. During the 1920s and 1930s, American race car designer Henry Miller offered groundbreaking engines to the Indianapolis 500. Miller also gave front-wheel drive technology it...
