How Automobiles Hitting Granite In 1906 Launched The Auto Show In Canada

Photo Credit: Chris Nagy/Car FYI Canada untitled As February passed this year Toronto’s auto show, a mainstay of the winter entertainment calendar, was one of many events forced into cancellation as we deal with our fight to conquer COVID-19. Missing out on occasions and interactions we have almost taken for granted has hopefully presented the thoughts to us all realizing just how precious those moments are. Reflecting on the past of the Canadian International AutoShow drove me to the event’s deepest origin. Though the current iteration of the exhibition dates back to 1974, the show that first acquainted Canada with the automobile in a large scale occurred 115 years ago.   In 1906, Toronto was growing rapidly on numerous fronts. The population in the direct city area exploded from 208,000 in 1901 to 376,500 by 1911. In addition to newcomers calling Toronto home in that first decade of the 20 th century, city limits expanded through several annexations ...

In the Spirit of the Canadian International AutoShow

Photo Credit: Chris Nagy/Car FYI Canada If not for the ongoing, unprecedented world issue that required our attention, yesterday (Sunday, February 21st), the 2021 edition of the Canadian International AutoShow would have wrapped in what would have certainty been a memorable occasion.  A little more than a year and a week ago, I returned from the Metro Toronto Convention Centre where I absorbed the science, technology and beauty of the modern auto industry. At the time, I was in the presence of concepts such as the BMW Vision M NEXT and Infiniti QS Inspiration, production vehicle symbolizing Canada’s changing roadways including the Ford Mustang Mach E and Audi e-tron Sportback as well as the super exotics like the Bugatti La Voiture Noire. There was little thought attending the 2020 Canadian International AutoShow that the next year’s event would have been cancelled. One of many occasions disrupted by the global battle of 2020 that has already claimed too much (admittedly many ...

Revved-Up For The 2017 Motorama Custom Car and Motorsport Expo

Photo Credit: Chris Nagy Canadian automotive enthusiasts are on the cusp of finding some undiscovered wonders of 2017. As spring grows closer and (one of these days) the cold wallop of winter will be worn out of the Canadian air, our favourite time is when our choice car, truck or motorcycle can roam roadways idyllically. It is also a time when motorsports shift into high gear as engine noises and tire smoke will fulfill our senses. In preparations and preview of what the 2017 automotive calendar will entail, the Motorama Custom Car and Motorsport Expo fills Mississauga’s International Centre on the outskirts of Toronto. The third annual event under its current motorsport and customized vehicle focus, the 2017 Motorama Custom Car and Motorsport Expo establishes unity of speed, style as well as thrill. With prizes and honours up for grabs by exhibitors, there is a guarantee for seeing some Canadian automotive greatness from March 10th to March 12th. Part of a grand view of moto...

Preview for the 2014 Canadian International AutoShow

Photo Credit: Chris Nagy As Canadians, we are once again enduring a challenging winter that has brought all the snow and cold weather we are accustomed to north of the 49th parallel. Skiing, snowmobiling or building a snowman allows many of us to maintain our humour and happiness during this season that always wallops Canada in full force. For automobiles, winter presents a period where our favourite four-wheel conveyance is expected to perform in hostile situations. Left out on frigid driveways or unheated garages, roads covered in snow and/or whatever traction solution our municipality chooses for safety, this is a time of the year where we forget the true beauty of motoring. Maybe in this month of February it is the perfect time to remind ourselves how great the automobile can be. For this reason, the arrival of the 2014 Canadian International AutoShow in Toronto is ideal. Opening this Friday in...
