Car FYI's Revved Up Weekend Review: September 3-September 5, 2021

Photo Credit: Jared East/Getty Images untitled NASCAR Cup Series: Hamlin Holds Off Charging Larson for Win at The Lady in Black A gruelling 500-mile race on one of the most historic tracks on the NASCAR circuit, the Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway had the extra provenance of being the first race of the 2021 Cup Series playoffs. The 1.366-mile oval played havoc with the championship ambitions for most of the 16 drivers vying this year’s season-ending crown. The track known as the Lady in Black claimed Kyle Busch, Chase Elliott, William Byron and Michael McDowell in accidents over the 367-lap race. Though Hamlin was able to keep Kyle Larson behind him through the final 36-lap run as the last lap approached, the driver of the #5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet aggressively entered turn 3 to make one last charge on the #11 Offerpad Toyota field by Joe Gibbs Racing. Rubbing the rear of Hamlin’s car hard through turn 4, Larson’s late effort was ...

NASCAR Cup Series: Allmendinger Conquers All at Indy Race Course

Photo Credit: Stacy Revere/Getty Images untitled For 2021, the NASCAR Cup Series arrives at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for what might have been the most hyped event since their inaugural race on the famous 2.5-mile oval. Instead of running on the speedway synonymous with the IndyCar Series’ crown jewel competition, NASCAR’s top stock cars battled on the 14-turn, 2.439-mile road course. The race was indeed memorable but only because of some late-race issues with the track setting up a path to victory for one less than likely winner. With William Byron taking pole as well as Chase Elliott and Kyle Larson leading sizable stints, Hendrick Motorsports again showed their customary mastery of road course racing as they have done throughout the year. Richard Childress Racing’s Tyler ...

Denny Hamlin Wins Daytona 500 By 0.010-Second Margin

Photo Credit: Jonathan Ferrey/Getty Images The first 200 laps of competition for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series 2016 season took place at the crown jewel of stock car racing. A facility recently renovated under the Daytona Rising initiative focused on greater fan comfort (a plan also including the reduction of seating from the 2014 capacity of over 145,000 to approximately 101,000), the track configuration contributing to high-speeds and multi-car drafting remained the same. This year's Daytona 500 saw the race decided in a matter of less than half the distance of the 2.5-mile track on the final lap. Before the Green Flag Since 1982, the Daytona 500 has been the stage to start of the Cup Series season. Ahead of the green flag for the 58th annual 500 mile race at the 2.5-mile Daytona International Speedway oval, several radical changes have been instituted for the new Sprint Cup Series season. A new charter team structure guarantees 36 teams will start every race this seas...
